How to Record Product Demos That Convert
A repeatable four-part structure for demo videos, plus the recording techniques that keep viewers watching to the end.
A product demo has one job: make the viewer think "I want to do that." Here's the structure we see working across hundreds of SnapZoom-made demos, and how to record each part well.
The four-part structure
1. Hook (0–10 seconds)
Open with the end result, not your login page. Show the finished dashboard, the exported video, the automated workflow — whatever your product produces. Then say: "Here's how this took 45 seconds."
2. Problem (10–25 seconds)
One or two sentences naming the pain. Viewers don't need convincing that the problem exists — they need to hear that you know it exists.
3. Walkthrough (25 seconds – 2 minutes)
Now do the thing, live and honestly. This is where recording quality decides everything:
- Zoom on every meaningful click. With SnapZoom this happens automatically — the viewer's eye is always where your cursor is.
- Narrate outcomes, not clicks. Say "now the report builds itself," not "now I click the blue button."
- One flow, no detours. Every tangent costs viewers. Save secondary features for a second video.
4. Call to action (final 10 seconds)
One CTA, spoken and shown on screen. "Start free at yourapp.com" beats a list of five links.
Recording techniques that raise watch time
- Keep it under 2 minutes. Completion rates fall off a cliff after that.
- Show your face at the start. A webcam bubble for the hook builds trust; you can hide it during the walkthrough.
- Use keystroke display for power features. Shortcuts on screen make your product look fast.
- Record at a clean state. Test data named "asdf" undermines an otherwise great demo.
The math that makes this worth doing
If editing a demo takes an afternoon, you'll make one per quarter. If it takes one take, you'll make one per feature, per audience, per campaign. Volume — not perfection — is what makes demo videos compound.
